Michael is an excellent instructor and I highly recommend signing up for the basic freediver course. The learning process from the classroom to the pool and finally to the ocean was measured, safe, and personalized for each student. This course exceeded my expectations! I guarantee you will learn new things about yourself, be challenged, and gain a better appreciation of the sport of freediving. – via

I just finished my Free Diving course with Michael and cannot say enough positive things about his teaching style and this course. Michael is an extremely knowledgeable instructor who instilled informational humor, anecdotes, and excitement into every part of this course. His contagious passion for the sport, coupled with an unwavering commitment to safety and personalized instruction created an empowering and supportive learning environment. This course definitely pushed me to new limits and I have a renewed respect for free divers. I’m excited to keep practicing and developing this new skill. – via

I am very happy to have chosen Dive California, I really enjoyed my dives with them. Our guide was Julian, and he was very thoughtful and took me to wonderful places to see the kelp forests as well as to different points to see sea lions. He was a good guide, and I liked his passion for marine conservation an animal welfare. I dived in weekdays, and the groups were really small (maximum 3 divers) which I found a plus point. Something important to point out is that the water in San Diego is quite cold, but totally worthy. – via

I did 2-tank dive with Julian at La Jolla cove back in September. I really enjoyed the experience, and I would highly recommend him as a diving instructor. It was my first cold water dive and Julian did an amazing job fitting me with all the necessary equipment, explaining the key aspects of the cold-water diving and diving in a kelp forest, and setting the expectations. Visibility that day was not the greatest, but Julian did everything he could to make it an enjoyable experience. I was most interested in diving in a kelp forest and navigating it was really exciting. We saw a ton fish, lobsters, and, obviously, sea lions. Julian even took me to a couple of spots where he knows sea lions like to play. We just sat there and observed them going around it in circles. It was really mesmerizing. I went for a 2-tank dive with DIVE California. On the first dive we had several very new divers, 4 of which showed up super late. The DIVE California crew gracefully still allowed them to dive with us. The crew gave a very informative and comprehensive talk about the dive in preparation for getting in the water which was great. When we got into the water, the 4 newer had nothing but problems, not the fault of the DIVE California crew. However the DIVE California crew were able to safely get them back to shore and while the rest of waited out in the water enjoying the sea lion choir and the nice weather. Once the crew returned, we began the dive. Overall the DIVE California crew handled the situation very well and allowed everyone still have 2 great dives. Thank you DIVE California for a great experience! – via

Done a guided scuba and a free diving course at this location. Julian and Michael are both great—they are safety oriented and exude confidence and competence. They make each modality approachable for all skill levels. There is elevated risk in both, but you can be sure with Dive California, you will be getting squared away guides and instructors who are above and beyond the highest level of certification.

I wouldn’t use anyone else for my Southern California diving, and will likely return here from Las Vegas to gain addition skills, knowledge and certifications.

I recommend Dive California without reservation. – via

Great experience and cannot recommend Dive California enough. Did two dives in La Jolla Cove. Michael is incredibly knowledgable about the area and conditions. Looking forward to diving again with them when I’m back in San Diego. – via

This isn’t his main Google page. You’ll see a different one that has 77 amazing reviews. Michael, the owner of Dive California, is an excellent trainer and guide. I did my PADI level 1 Freediver course with Dice California. He has immense knowledge of the area and freediving, and is great at sharing his knowledge with others. I highly recommend Dive California for PADI courses or as a local dive guide. – via

Best kiteboarding instructor ever! John is simply the best. From safety to progression John will have your back the entire way. I trust him completely for riding and gear advice. I’ve been at it a year in light wind San Diego and I’ve been all over in all types of wind and conditions and I can tell you kiteboarding is the best board sport hands down and I owe it all to John.
