My boyfriend and I booked a snorkeling trip with Espirito Azul in August 2023. We were really excited to go snorkeling near Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo. My boyfriend used to go snorkeling occasionally and it was my first time.
Alhough the staff was very friendly during booking and the trip, there are a few things we didn’t feel good about and which made the trip not as satisfying as we hoped:

1) Upon arrival we were handed snorkeling equipment and noticed that the straps of my boyfriend’s fins were broken so they could only be adjusted a certain way.

2) When we started snorkeling my boyfriend noticed that his diving mask didn’t seal correctly and filled up with water. After a while of trying and trying to fix it, we asked the instructor for a replacement – where it needs to be mentioned that they didn’t have any spare equipment on the boat. She was kind enough to give my boyfriend her own diving mask, but so she had to continue the trip without a functioning mask for herself.

3) The wetsuits looked a bit rugged and had tears here and there.

4) The cleanliness of the equipment is questionable as the wetsuits, boots, etc seem to only be dunked into salt water after each use whoever was using it and then hung up to dry for the next person. Not sure about desinfection etc.

The trip itself worked out well and was a nice addition to our vacation, despite the room for improvement. – via google

Very good dive centre. One of the better ones I’ve been to (and I’ve dived all over the world).

Well equipped with good equipment that is properly maintained. Good dive training pool.
Hot and cold showers. Tea and coffee making facilities and free popcorn when you return from dives.

Staff are friendly, welcoming and know what they are talking about. Felt very comfortable and confident in them taking us out. My partner did two training courses with them – SSI Deep and Nitrox- and they managed it well.
The dive guiding was v good – good briefings and well managed dives. Back up guide at the rear helping those who couldn’t get down, and to take those running low on air up early. Managed some challenging situations (mask issues, newbie diver on first deep dives, sickness, and even a dislocated shoulder) VERY professionally.

Boat driver v good and in challenging conditions. You’re diving on a rib, which is not very nice actually on surface intervals when their is swell- take the staff up on their offer of sea sickness tablets, as they really work!
In between dives they serve you coffee, coconut biscuits and egg sandwiches which are v good. You also do a bit of ocean safari between dives which is nice to see stuff, and move about a bit so you aren’t bobbing around on the surface like a cork.

Of course, fabulous diving. Tofo is a Mecca for that, and we saw all sorts of amazing things on our two day diving trip.

We will dive again with peri peri when we come back to Tofo- can’t imagine a better centre. – via google

Três déçue par notre plongée du jour …
6 plongeurs pour un instructeur…ce fut assez confus sous l’eau et le guide de palanquée, au demeurant très sympathique, ne s’en préoccupait pas.
Certaines combinaisons étaient très abîmées et pour ma part, j’ai eu un masque qui s’embuait constamment malgré les précautions prises (lavage avec salive) avant le départ.
Ma fille a rencontré un souci et parvenait difficilement à se stabiliser…le guide l’a lestée davantage mais cela n’a pas permis de régler le problème. Elle n’a pu poursuivre la plongée.
Un ensemble de désagréments qui ont gâché la balade…d’autant que la visibilité était très moyenne.
Les tarifs sont excessifs et il faut payer Cash…pas de paiement en carte bleue, visa american express…je trouve cela très surprenant voir suspect…car même le plus petit commerce de l’île accepte le paiement par carte.
Une fois la plongée terminée, sur le bateau un thé chaud et des fruits sont proposés par une adorable skipper mais arrivés au port personne ne prête attention à vous : pas de partage de moment (sauf entre plongeurs), et l’instructrice (restée sur place) vous somme de rincer puis de suspendre vos combi….j’aurais apprécié un peu plus de courtoisie.

My girlfriend wanted to take the Open Water course. She had a lot of respect for it and wanted to take it slow, but it seemed like the diving instructor didn’t agree and wanted to rush things.

1. He pressured her to get into the water quickly, telling her she didn’t have much time (the weather was also very bad that day, with rain and waves). She wanted to take her time to gather the courage to get in, but the instructor seemed impatient.

2. When she was in open water, she didn’t want to go underwater immediately and wanted to take her time because she was still a bit scared. The instructor didn’t seem to like that and tried to pull her underwater several times. After multiple attempts to pull her down, she decided to abort the whole thing because she no longer felt comfortable.

My personal experience:

During my last dive, I was very stressed due to buoyancy issues, a constantly fogging mask, and constant distractions from the dive master. I realized very late that I had very little air left in my tank at a depth of 20 meters. Since the dive master never asked how much air I had left (we were a group of 4), I signaled to him how much air I had left.

With his body language and gestures, he seemed unsure about what he, I, or we should do next. He then signaled for me to immediately surface. In the stressful situation, I didn’t think much and followed the command (I didn’t have a dive computer with me). I then attempted to surface without equipment and tried to make a slow ascent and a safety stop. When I reached the surface, I noticed that the dive master had stayed underwater with the other two students. It took approximately 10 minutes for him to surface.

After about 30-40 minutes on the surface, I realized that I was experiencing symptoms of decompression sickness. I went to the hospital on the same day to receive treatment. After 3 days, I felt somewhat better.

One week later, back home, the symptoms returned. I went to the hospital again for treatment and had to undergo several sessions with a psychologist because I had mild post-traumatic stress disorder. I suffered mentally for a month due to this incident, as I thought I would die on that remote island far from home because of the symptoms. – via google
